The identification and assessment of learning differences is essential! The earlier a learning difference is recognised, the sooner the learner can build on the strengths of the their learning profile and understand the diffculties they may sometimes face and need to overcome.
Identification and Assessment ...
A dyslexia friendly school will try to spot learning differences at an early age. Computer/ online screeners can be used to build a picture of learning strengths and weaknesses and checklists can be used to highlight areas of needs and inform areas for support. A good school will ensure that all staff have had dyslexia awareness training to give them confidence to spot the early signs of a dyslexic, autistic, learner and learners that may need extra support to succeed. Good schools will also have good whole-school assessment procedures in place and have an understanding of where a child should be working according to their age.
If a child is seen to display the profile of dyslexic learner they may receive extra support in areas such as spelling, reading and memory. This may be in small groups or 1-1, depending on the level of need.
Good links should also be made with Outside Agencies who provide excellent support for schools, parents and pupils. Further assessment may be provided by Outside Agencies to help build a picture of skills.
