For any child learning to read can be a challenge. The key is to make it fun, allow mistakes and not make it a chore. A dyslexic child may be reluctant to read, they will need all the encouragement and support they can get. Remember to spend time on learning reading skills- learning key words and sounds. There are also a  number of strategies children can all use when trying to tackle unfamiliar words- sounding it out, looking at the pictures, reading ahead, guessing the word and seeing if it fits and looking for words in words.

Paired Reading ...

If a child is not wanting to read, why not try the 'paired reading' approach. This could be a you read a page, I read a page approach. Or allow you child to read what they feel comfortable with and helping them with the more challenging words.

Phun Fonics ...

In most schools children first learn to read using phonics.  Children have to learn the sound that a letter or a group of letters make. Understanding and remembeing these sounds allows a child to decode unfamiliar words.
