It can be hard sometimes to know what to do to help your child if they have dyslexia or any other kind of learning difference. You can sometimes feel very alone! Hopefully this page will put you in the right direction.

First of all- Remember!

Just because your child has a learning difference, does not make them better or worse- it just makes them different! And who wants their child to be the same as everybody else! To be successful in learning children need to understand their strengths and weaknesses. They need to be able to make mistakes and learn from them in an environment that allows them to do so. Having a learning difference can sometimes be frustrating for parents as well as the child, but remember with the right support and encouragement they will flourish and succeed.

Parent Information ...

There are lots of support groups and organisations that can  provide specific information and put you in touch with professionals who can help. Why not take a look.

How to help your child ...

  • Be patient and understanding.

  • Find out my strengths and weaknesses as a learner and help me understand them.

  • Don't get cross if I can't get something right first time.

  • Allow me to make mistakes and learn from them.

  • Give me time to learn something new.

  • Allow me to learn large pieces of information in chunks.

  • Try and find a fun way to learn new things using my different senses- using ICT, crafts, songs etc.

  • Allow me to overlearn.

  • Set aside time to help me with my homework / key skills.

  • Don't make me work for hours at a time - little but often is best!

  • Communicate with my school and Class teacher.

  • Be consistent.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for advice.

  • Help me be organised with equipment and with getting things to school.

  • Find out more about my learning difference.

  • Join parent help groups that support specific learning differences.

  • Encourage me and reward me.

  • Love me for who I am.

Don't forget .. your child has extra ordinary talents, they will flourish in the right environment!
